DO YOU WANT TO BE HEARD?

Do you want your opinions to be heard?

Do you want the supporters to have a voice that is actually listened to?

If so, Grimsby Town Supporters Trust would like to invite you to attend an informal meeting next Thursday (7th August) at The Imperial Public House, Cleethorpes at 7pm.

A club’s supporters should always have a voice, both in good times and bad. GTST has established itself as that voice, an organisation run by supporters to represent the interests and opinions of supporters. Over the last five years, we have built up a good relationship with the football club without, contrary to what some people may think, being up its backside. We are consulted by them and they listen to what we have to say, even though we may not always agree.

The Trust will never seek to deny anyone the right to free speech on messageboards even if what is said happens to be less than complimentary about us. However it is obvious from comments made recently by John Fenty that whilst he may react to things that are posted on messageboards, what is said will ultimately have no influence on how the club is run.

As Billy Bragg once said, there is power in a union, in this case a union of football supporters. The Grimsby Town Supporters Trust currently represents around 250 members, which probably amounts to less than 10% of the Mariners hardcore support. Nevertheless, the club is listening to us.

As you will be aware from both messageboard threads and the article in the Grimsby Evening Telegraph last week, the Grimsby Town Supporters Trust has been struggling to function properly for some time now, mainly due to a lack of people prepared to give up their time to help run it. We have been barely managing to tread water, let alone progress and take the Trust forward as we would like to.

Whilst the threads were pretty negative at the outset, they have ultimately had a positive effect, in that a few people have now come forward to offer their services. We have therefore arranged this meeting for next Thursday as an opportunity for these people and anyone else interested in getting involved to meet with members of the Trust Board and discuss how we can take GTST forward.

Whilst we are looking for people with a wide variety of skills, one particular area where we have been falling down is communications and this will be high up on the agenda. Plans are being formed to re-vamp the Trust website and to increase the frequency of communication with both members and non-members alike. Only by doing this will we ensure that we are truly representative of the fans’ views. So if you have a flair for web design, a talent for writing or you have your own ideas about how to improve communications, come and see us.

If the Grimsby Town Supporters Trust is to flourish and buck the trend of other supporters organisations, which have thrived in times of trouble then ceased to exist through complacency during times of success, then we need your help. Don’t assume because the tax debt is nearly paid off and we have a millionaire chairman, that the crisis is over. A quick look at the rollercoaster history of Grimsby Town Football Club suggests that trouble is never far away, even if you don’t always see it coming.

When the next crisis happens, we don’t want to be scrambling to set up an organisation to bring the club back from the brink. We want it to already be in place. That’s why the Supporters Trust needs to not just survive, but to flourish and become a force to be reckoned with. So if you think you can help, please attend the meeting next week. Or if you are unable to make it on the night but want to get involved, drop us a line at This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it .
