It's that time of year. The season is coming to a close, with only one home game left against Macclesfield. BUT the season doesn’t end next Saturday. The Mariners have one game left, on Wednesday 6th May when Grimsby fans will be taking on Lincoln fans in the second leg of their friendly charity match.
The match, which takes place at Sincil Bank (kick off at 7.30pm), will definitely be one for all to see. The Imps, who take a 3-2 lead into the second leg, will have home advantage but will the Mariners’ recent form in the league inspire the Grimsby fans team to victory? Mariners manager Chris Parker seems to think so. “Grimsby Town fans team are keen to turn around the slight first leg deficit when we visit Sincil Bank on 6th May. I felt the Grimsby team put in a tremendous performance in the first leg and were unlucky to lose on the day 2-3. We knew that man for man the Imps team were the stronger, but a tremendous work ethic and every player having a clear understanding of their role and what was expected of them ensured that we frightened the Imps team, who had expected a comfortable victory. Although the Lincoln lads didn’t bring their air raid siren with them, we knew they would put emphasis on an aerial bombardment and we weren’t disappointed. Any team managed by a Mr Beck was bound to play hoofball!! Our planning was based on trying to combat the long throws and high balls, whilst at the other end our kids had the legs on the ageing Imps defence. Looking forward to the second leg we do not expect the Imps to change their game plan. For many of them it is a little too late for old dogs to learn new tricks! We have a few surprises up our sleeves and have been working on a tactical move that involves locking TJ in the dressing room! The biggest success of the first leg was the camaraderie on the pitch, although it was slightly disappointing that the Imps players left Town so quickly after the League Two fixture as we would have liked to have discussed that result in more depth! With a team made up entirely of the first sixteen people who put their names forward and who were registered on the Fishy website at 1st January 2009, we know we could have recruited stronger players, but being true to the spirit of the game has given us an inner strength. We will be going all out for victory, but are all the players are proud to have raised money for the registered charities and also to wear the shirt of their beloved club." Tickets are on sale, and entrance is also pay on the gate on the night - £2 adults (15 and over), £1 children and under 2's free. There will be a bar and selection of food available. Gates open at 6.45pm All money raised will be split between the Grimsby and Lincoln Trusts and the children’s wards at Grimsby and Lincoln hospitals. |
